Artist Biography

Hiroko Okita

From Hiroshima, Japan.

2001 Started bag sewing in Bali.

2003 Adopted Japanese-Kakishibu (Persimmon tannin) and Bengala-mud dyeing techniques.

My own story

I was inspired to sewing by the broken her heart of my friend in Bali. I sewed a bag wishing her to go out with that bag and treat her hurt by finding joy.

For 2 years, I had lived in Bali, surrounded by nature, making bags, using Indonesian wax-resist dyeing technique, Batik. I asked local leather shoemakers to produce them in goatskin leather based on my samples.

After I came back to Japan, I tried to find earth-friendly materials and fabrics. At the same time I grew vegan in practice. This life style change inspired me to switch to linen dyed with Japanese-Kakishibu and Bengala-mud for dyeing techniques.
